LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — A man who has explored the North Pole by dog sled and
survived two avalanches in Kashmir is the guest speaker at an upcoming
fund-raiser for the Montrose Search and Rescue Team.
Gordon Wiltsie is a world traveler who has photographed his expeditions for
National Geographic. He will present a slide lecture May 8 at Descanso Gardens
about the Arctic Circle and his Baffin Island Ice Wall expedition.
The team hopes to raise at least $5,000 from the event to buy equipment and
outfit new team members, Capt. Jay Paneno said.
"Our ropes are getting old, our radios are getting old," he said.
"We have no money coming in from the budget at all anymore."
Funds raised will also go to offsetting the cost of a command post, he added.
Sponsorships are available for the event. Gold sponsors are asked to donate
$1,000, silver sponsors $500 and bronze sponsors $250. Sponsors will get
recognition in the event program, have their name announced during the evening
and be included on all press releases. Sponsorships are tax deductible.
The event also includes hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction. Tickets cost $55
per person. Reservations must be made by Tuesday.
